Coach Xavi Lopez is an international success story!
After growing up in Badelona, Spain, and advancing to the National Team age-group level, he followed his dream of playing college basketball in the United States. Despite only speaking Spanish, he matriculated at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Oregon. During his two years at CCC he learned the English language, excelled on the court and in the classroom, and earned a basketball scholarship to then Point Loma Nazarene University.
After excelling as a sharp shooting guard, and earning his bachelor’s degree at Point Loma, Lopez played for six seasons in the challenging ACB Spanish professional League.
Then he moved back to the states to start his career as Coach Lopez with the University of Oregon Women’s Basketball. As an Assistant Coach with the Ducks, Lopez excelled at recruiting elite international players, and was instrumental in helping the student-athletes to make a home at the U of O, and the Ducks became a top contender for the National Championship.
Now Coach Lopez starts the next step in his American basketball adventure as he heads to Sacramento State University Women’s Basketball, and assumes the Associate Head Coach role with Head Coach Mark Campbell.
